MAGPy: Advanced Compliance Assessment of WPT Systems

MAGPy3 (Handheld and Robot-Based Systems)

SPEAG's MAGPy3 handheld system

What is MAGPy3?

The Magnetic Amplitude and Gradient Probe System (MAGPy) is the most advanced solution to demonstrate compliance of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems and other near-field sources operating between 3 kHz and 10 MHz with national regulations and international standards. MAGPy3 is a redesign of MAGPy Version 2, delivering substantial improvements in both electrical and mechanical performance and enabling advanced time-domain measurement and analysis. We offer two MAGPy3-based measurement systems:

  • The robot-based system, DASY8/6 Module WPT, is the most accurate system on the market and enables direct comparison with the basic restrictions in the laboratory according to Clause 5.2.5 of IEC/IEEE 63184 (Tier 4), FCC KDB 680106 D01 and ISED Canada RSS-102.NS.MEAS below 4 MHz; for frequencies ≥4 MHz, DASY8/6 Module SAR is the most accurate solution.
  • The MAGPy3 handheld system is best suited to demonstrate in situ the compliance of devices with large coils (>100 mm) with the basic restrictions according to Clause 5.2.4 of IEC/IEEE 63184 (Tier 3) or with the reference levels according to Clause 5.2.3 of IEC/IEEE 63184 (Tier 2).

Both systems offer significant advantages over other instruments, reducing overestimation of exposure larger than 40 dB.

MAGPy3 Handheld System

MAGPy3 handheld system consists of the MAGPy3 probe (with the integrated MAGPy3 data acquisition system) and a tablet PC providing a user-friendly touch-screen-based graphic user interface. It is the only system for demonstrating compliance of WPT devices according to Clause 5.2.4 of IEC/IEEE 63184.

The incident fields (amplitude and gradient) are measured with the MAGPy3 probe and directly compared to the reference levels. Streaming of the time-domain envelope of the incident fields and the time-average field values are now available with the MAGPy3 probe.

The induced fields (E-field, current density, and specific absorption rate (SAR)) in the human body by the incident H-field are instantly determined using the novel generic gradient source model (GGSM) method defined in IEC/IEEE 63184. The exposure contribution from the incident E-field is also estimated using the latest published approximation formulas. The conservatively estimated induced fields are compared to the basic restrictions.

The system is much more accurate and results in less overestimation (up to 40 dB) than conventional devices.

DASY8/6 Module WPT V3.0+

DASY8/6 Module WPT is the most accurate method to assess WPT exposure. It is based on the MAGPy technology integrated in our DASY8/6 product line for high-precision 3D robot-based scanning. It is the only system for demonstrating compliance of WPT devices according to Clause 5.2.5 of IEC/IEEE 63184 and enables fully automated compliance testing with FCC KDB 680106 D01 and ISED Canada RSS-102.NS.MEAS.

DASY8/6 Module WPT V3.0+ uses the MAGPy Version 2 or MAGPy3 probe (with the integrated data acquisition system, and with a reference sensor connected to the probe) mounted to the DASY8/6 robot. The induced fields are reconstructed using only the measured data. The dedicated graphical user interface fully automates the testing workflow. When operating with the MAGPy3 probe, Module WPT V3.0+ provides two new features, envelope streaming and event snapshot, enabling advance time-domain measurements and comprehensive waveform analysis.

The module determines compliance of WPT systems and magnetic field sources without overestimation. It is also more accurate than simulation-based evaluations as it is based on actual fields and does not require modeling of the WPT device.

Applications

Both systems accurately measure the EM field in the time-domain for any localized field distribution and are especially suited to evaluate human exposure. Example applications include:

  • Automotive/vehicular/train WPT
  • Industrial and utility (e.g., industrial welding, induction cooking, electronic article surveillance, and WPT)
  • Energy supply (e.g., installation and operators of WPT networks)
  • Ubiquitous devices equipped with WPT technologies (e.g., mobile phones, implantable medical devices, wearable devices, and Internet of Things (IoT))
  • High-power EM sources
EM Safety Guideline Compatibility

Both systems permit compliance testing of WPT devices with current safety guidelines for both the general public and occupational exposures, including: ICNIRP 1998, ICNIRP 2010, ICNIRP 2020, IEEE C95.1-2019, FCC, Health Canada Safety Code 6, EU Directive 2013, EU Council Recommendation 1999, BGV B11, 26. BlmSchV.
