The rapidly evolving applications and increasing usage of wireless devices has propelled the demand for the development of new devices as well as for novel methods to test RF performance under a wider array of usage patterns. SPEAG is proud to introduce its novel POsable Phantom for Electromagnetic sYstems Evaluations (POPEYE V5.x), which can be flexibly adjusted to simulate almost any usage pattern. The selected phantom dimensions meet the requirements for conservative testing.
Anastasija Ichsanow, Vice Head of EM Phantoms, was jointly responsible for the development of the new whole-body phantom
POPEYE allows for the simulation of almost any potential usage pattern by mimicking natural arm and leg positions through simple manipulations. Testing configurations include over-the-air (OTA) evaluations in anechoic chambers, drive tests, or other field situations. It can be applied for evaluations of BAN, implants, and specific absorption rate (SAR) testing with DASY52.
Additionally, we would like to inform you that SPEAG has finalized its comprehensive evaluation of the most commonly used handgrips with wide-format smart phones, tablet computers, and wireless keyboards. The first prototypes of the experimental hands SHO V2RW/LW, SHO V2TAB, SHO V2THG, SHO V2LAP derived from the CTIA hand are currently being manufactured, and will be available for release in April 2013.
The uniquely flexible Whole-Body EM Phantom V5.x can simulate realistic human postures for EM evaluations in which the influence of body posture cannot be neglected. The Whole-Body EM Phantom V5.x consists of ten sectional phantoms including:
The anthropomorphically shaped shell of the torso phantom TORSO X V5.x is made from glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy (relative permittivity: 3.5 ± 0.5; loss tan: < 0.05) with a shell thickness of 2 mm +/‒ 0.2 mm in the ear-mouth region and 3 mm ± 1 mm in other regions. The torso dimensions meet the requirements for conservative testing. In the head region, the shell is identical to that of the SAM phantom according to the IEEE SCC34 standard and compatible with the 3GPP and CTIA standards. The shell has an internal volume of 28 l.
The posable right and left arms ARMR/L V5.1 and the posable right and left legs LEGR/L V5.1 consist of an outer bulk part manufactured from a silicon- and carbon-based mixture with target parameters according to CTIA V3.2 and an inner low-loss dielectric structure with joints. This architecture makes the arms and legs suitable for EM evaluations above 500 MHz. The arms ARMR/L V5.1 are compatible with all SPEAG hand phantoms. The right and left feet JIAOR/L V5.1 can be easily attached to the ankle of the corresponding leg. The sophisticated design and resultant flexibility of the joints allows the user to pose the arms and legs in any imaginable realistic posture. We are currently developing conductive sleeves for Version 5.5 to allow electrical connectivity of the body parts.
The BUTT V5.1 is a generic buttocks phantom consisting of an outer bulk part manufactured from a silicon- and carbon-based mixture and an inner low-loss dielectric structure (fixed with minimal metallic parts). The material target parameters are based on the data provided in CTIA V3.2. The buttocks phantom BUTT V5.x was developed for EM evaluations in combination with torso phantom TORSO V5.x; can be easily attached to the bottom plate of the torso phantom; and can be complemented with the right and left generic leg phantoms.
The Whole-Body EM Phantom V5.x is supported and transported by the wheeled STAND V5.1. It consists of a wooden base with a detachable metallic transporter and a vertical support structure composed of white polyoxymethylene (POM), white glass-fiber-reinforced poles, and black glass-fiber-reinforced PA66 engineering plastic. The metallic transporter can be removed for EM evaluations.
