MAGPy V1-0: The Only Instrument for Compliance Testing in the Near Field

MAGPy V1-0 is SPEAG’s handheld system for precise in situ exposure assessments in the very close near field to the far field of sources operating below 10 MHz. It integrates 27 miniaturized time-domain sensors and is far superior to any other instrument available on the market as it reduces the exposure overestimation by up to >40 dB. MAGPy V1-0 is the only device fully compatible with IEC/IEEE63184 PAS.

SPEAG provides high-precision measurement solutions for exposure evaluation and compliance testing where traditional instruments are not good enough and prevent innovations. Until now, it was impossible to carry out reliable in situ compliance testing in the close near field of wireless power transfer (WPT) systems or near high-current industrial installations – in these cases, the reference limits are exceeded by several factors but the systems are still compliant with the relevant safety regulations as the induced fields are much below the limits defined by the basic restrictions.

To provide a solution to this problem, we have spent the last few years developing the Magnetic Amplitude and Gradient Probe System (MAGPy) for in situ compliance evaluations of WPT systems and any other strong magnetic near-field sources operating at frequencies of between 3 kHz and 10 MHz with respect to reference levels and basic restrictions. The probe is constructed of (i) 24 small (1 cm2) time-domain loop sensors that are arranged on the corner of a cube to determine the magnetic (H/B-) field amplitude and gradient and (ii) two dipole sensors and a monopole sensor to measure the electric (E-) field amplitude simultaneously.

Exposure Evaluation

MAGPy V1-0 is the most accurate device for measuring the local H/B-field, the H/B-field gradient and the E-field. Most importantly, it is the first device available on the market that empowers users to demonstrate compliance with the basic restrictions, i.e., the induced E-fields, current density, and specific absorption rate (SAR) in the human body (bystanders or users). At the same time, it also allows the evaluation of the incident fields, i.e., the reference levels.

Compliance

MAGPy V1-0 allows compliance testing of devices with current guidelines regarding exposures of the general public and occupational exposures, including: IEC/IEEE 63184 PAS, FCC, ICNIRP 1998, ICNIRP 2010, IEEE C95.1 2005, EU Directive 2013, HC Code 6, BGV B11, and 26.BlmSchV.

Advantages Compared to Competitive Devices

MAGPy V1-0 is the only handheld instrument for precise measurements in the near field of sources:

  • Its H-field sensor has an active area of only 1 cm2 as required by IEC 63184 PAS for precise measurements (the smallest sensor on the market)
  • It is the only device able to estimate:
    • the maximum induced E-field averaged over 2 mm3 (e.g., ICNIRP 2020)
    • the maximum induced E-field averaged over a line of 5 mm (e.g., IEEE 2019)
    • the induced current density averaged over 1 cm2 (e.g., ICNIRP 1998)
    • SAR 1g (e.g., FCC, HC Code 6, IEEE 2019)
    • SAR 10g (e.g., ICNIRP 1998, 2020)
  • It reduces overestimation of the exposure values of up to 40 dB (a factor of 100 of field/current and a factor of 10’000 for SAR)
  • It allows entire recorded measurement sessions to be replayed, including post-measurement analysis and evaluations.

Applications

MAGPy V1-0 is optimized for in situ exposure and compliance evaluations at any location, including:

  • Automotive/vehicular/train wireless power transfer (WPT)
  • Industrial and utility (e.g., industrial welding, induction cooking, electronic article surveillance, and WPT)
  • Energy supply (e.g., installations and operators of WPT networks)
  • Ubiquitous devices equipped with WPT technologies (e.g., mobile phones, implantable medical devices, wearable devices, and Internet of Things (IoT))
  • High power electromagnetic sources
