Annual Z43-Auden Workshop Series in China and Taiwan: 14th Edition a Great Success!

In June 2019, SPEAG, ZMT Zurich MedTech AG (ZMT), and their distribution partner in China and Taiwan, AUDEN Technology Corporation hosted their popular annual hardware and software workshop series in China and Taiwan. AUDEN did an outstanding job in organizing the four events in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Taipei with overall almost 300 attendants from leading universities, industry, and government agencies – the highest number of participants so far!

All workshops featured a mix of presentations, live demos, exhibitions, and social gatherings with a particular focus on Z43's latest solutions for exposure evaluation and compliance testing from wireless power transfer to 5G mmWave applications. Participants were also able to learn about the future roadmap for technological advances in 2019/20 and beyond, and discuss customer needs and product requirements. In order to ensure an even more efficient flow of information, a simultaneous translation service in English and Chinese was available to the audience on site.

All workshops were officially opened by SPEAG’s President Prof. Niels Kuster and Auden’s CEO Daniel Chang. It was a particular honor to also have keynote speeches by Mr. Wang (CTTL) in Beijing, and by Prof. Ding (National Taipei University of Technology) and Prof. Chou (National Taiwan University) in Taipei. Following an update on international standards and regulation, Z43’s latest developments in software and hardware for SAR compliance, mmWave power density, material characterization and EMI/EMC were presented. In addition, specific solutions for wireless power transfer (WPT) evaluations, over-the-air (OTA) performance, and implant safety assessment/electromagnetic-neuronal interaction were introduced.

Product highlights and live demonstrations for hardware, presented by Niels Kuster and Dr. Sven Kühn (via video conference) and Dr. Jingtian Xi, focused on the new 5G-ready system for measuring power density at millimeter wave frequencies as well as the latest DASY software version 6.8.2 and cSAR3D/ cSAR3D-A updates (e.g., SW V3-0). Furthermore, the newly released Magnetic Amplitude and Gradient Probe System (MAGPy), a fully IEC compatible system for assessment of WPT exposure, was introduced, as well as the latest EM Phantoms for OTA testing of body-worn devices − including POPEYE-V10 with a face and exchangeable eyeballs. ICEy / ICEy-R, which includes optical technology for radiofrequency-transparent assessment of 5G compliance, mm-wave antenna near- field, and radiation performance, as well as the new OH4EMC system, were also showcased.

The numerics/software related product updates, presented by Dr. Nik Chavannes, Dr. Erdem Ofli, and Dr. Aiping Yao, focused on the latest versions and features of SPEAG’s and ZMT’s software simulation solutions, in particular live demos of the soon-to-be-released SEMCAD X Matterhorn V18.0 and Sim4Life V5.0 packages. An important milestone of the releases is the new unstructured finite-element method (FEM) solver and its powerful mesher engine, offering improved competitive advantage for simulations of WPT, EM-neuronal stimulation, and other low-frequency applications. Additional highlights included important 5G and WPT toolkit extensions, major graphical user interface (GUI) performance boosts, as well as recent advances for computational modeling of neuromodulation and numerical safety assessment of active and passive implants (IMAnalytics V2.0, MRIxViP V2.0). Finally, an update on the NEUROMAN project and the latest additions of computable anatomical phantoms to the Virtual Population (ViP, IT’IS Foundation) was provided.

The positive feedback from numerous participants highlights another year of successful workshops in China and Taiwan. The 2019 workshop series closed with the traditional raffle, followed by many fruitful discussions. Z43 would like to thank all participants for their valuable contributions − we are looking very much forward to welcoming you in the next year!
